Volunteer profiles

Teresa Djurhuus

I want to take part in the process that will help eliminate the "us verses them" mentality. It is ok to be different, we should learn to accept the beauty of it. These differences are what define us and make us different from everybody else. If we want to make a difference in the world we should start in our everday life by eliminating the barriers that stand in our way of interacting with "the other."

Let's not stand around passively as we become more and more grouped with our "own kind." Let us be inspired by others and let others be inspired by us! This is what I live by adn this is why I started volunteering for Crossing Borders.

Teresa is currently studying for her Master of Arts in International Business Communication at Copenhagen Business School, with English language studies. She interned in Haifa at a NGO called Shatil and studied abroad in Peru. She also volunteered in Cambodia teaching English to children.

bilal@crossingborder.org
Bilal has taken the initiative to bring Crossing Borders (CB) to Pakistan. A graduate of CB Global Studies program in Denmark, he was selected out of 500 applicants from the Muslim world to be awarded the prestigious scholarship for the spring 2011 term.

With a masters in Public Administration from the University of Karachi in Pakistan, Bilal has learned something very important which is that you should put your own fingerprint on this life in terms of developing this world starting from yourself, your country, your region and then the world.

Bilal has led hundreds of high school students across Denmark as a Youth Facilitator and conducted various training sessions on volunteerism and active citizenship. From an early age, he represented his institutions in public speaking competitions. A Youth Ambassador of Pakistan and before coming to Denmark, he actively participated in various youth trainings and conferences in China, Czech Republic, Germany, Malaysia, U.A.E, Pakistan, Poland, Indonesia and Turkey. Moreover, he is a certified trainer at the School of Leadership in Pakistan. As a CB scholarship recipient he was chosen to attend Soliya Online Connect Training Program and is now expecting to facilitate the same in the year 2012, National Focal Point Pakistan for UNICEF Rural Voices of Youth and District Focal Point Y-Peer Pakistan. He is also a member of the Youth Parliament of Pakistan and board member of Pakistani Youth Organization.

His principle is: Action without vision is wasting time, vision without action is dreaming, but vision with action can change the world. He says that “The true meaning of life is to serve humanity, but what from you pay back, the benefits of it you are not expected to know”.

Bilal is featured in the TCS Pakistan Connect Magazine and ‘Young Voice of Pakistan’ has been published in The Nation Newspaper in Pakistan. His contributions on social, political and foreign issues of Pakistan have been published in local magazines, newspapers, and as a Foreign Correspondent his articles were published by Kurier Dyplomatyczny (Polish Magazine). His article ‘All the way from Pakistan to Denmark’ was published at the Crossing Borders web portal. He has also been honored to receive the best delegate speaker award in political pillar at the Model Asia-Europe Meeting 2008 in China. I am from Germany, and moved to Denmark to complete my Bachelor in International Sales & Marketing. I love experiencing foreign cultures and meeting foreign people. I have attended international classes in Denmark, where I have met many interesting, kindhearted people from Europe and all over the world.

My hunger for international experience started in 2004 when I attended a student exchange program and spent one year in US.  Meeting new people, extending my horizon and getting out of my comfort zone is something I enjoy very much.  I am happy to explore and give my contribution to making the world a bit more open-minded.

I’m studying for my Master of Arts in International Business, with specialization in Spanish and Communication, at Copenhagen Business School. I interned at a Danish Communication and Translation Agency in Mijas, Spain, where, among others, I taught Spanish to a diversified group of Europeans. I have also been studying abroad for a semester in Lima, Peru, where I have got a close look at the Peruvian culture and met many fascinating people from all over the world – which have all contributed to expanding my horizon and being openminded with people from foreign cultures. Currently I’m writing my master thesis in interculturel communication and cultural conflicts in business and cooperation between Denmark and Mexico.

I have travelled to and participated in language and culture courses in many different countries in Latin America such as Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Peru. In addition to all of my Latin American adventures I have travelled and worked in Australia and New Zealand, which was a fantastic experience, because I got to meet lots of different people from many different cultures. All this travelling around the world together with my choice of study has given me a great interest in and knowledge about intercultural communication, politics, conflicts, and development processes.

I volunteer at Crossing Borders because I like to contribute to making the world a better and more peaceful place. At Crossing Borders I primarily work with communication tasks.
